Anti-litter campaign set to sweep through Britain’s woodlands
Litter is a huge problem across the UK, with clean-ups costing councils £682m. But it’s not just towns and cities…
Littering is becoming an ever increasing issue in the UK, not only does it affect our own perception of our environment and damage wildlife, but it can also be costly for local councils to clean up and this is money that can be spent elsewhere, especially in times of austerity and cutting back on unnecessary spending.
Keep Britain Tidy have estimated that over 30-million tonnes of litter are collected from our streets every year - costing local authorities around £1-billion. To put this into context, that's enough litter to fill Wembley Stadium four times over!
At the start of 2016, new fines (of up to £150) were introduced to prevent people from dropping litter and to make them think twice before doing so. Initiatives like Clean for the Queen have also been introduced to encourage people to volunteer and tackle to problem head on in their own local communities and take back their community spaces from the litter louts.
