An engineer, that has spent his entire career working in the recyclables and renewables sector, has been shortlisted for a lifetime achievement award at the UK Business Tech Awards.

Rory Hughes, from Ireland, has been nominated for the award by his employers IRR Waste to Energy, part of the Carlton Forest Group.

Currently, he holds the position of Technical Director for the business which is home to the UK’s only continuous pyrolysis plant.

“Rory has dedicated his entire career to designing technologies to process waste material and generate by-products and energy, and he has worked on some revolutionary projects that have allowed global corporations to become self-sufficient and sustainable long before it became the thing that everyone is talking about,” said Diane Ward, Chief Operating Officer, Carlton Forest Group.

“He has been pivotal to the inception and ongoing development of our IRR Waste 2 Energy division and continues to be an inspiration to the team regarding our goals and objectives both in the long and the short term.”

Rory is now working with the team to establish the test kiln and research facility which allows them to fully explore hard to recycle and hard to treat waste streams and test their suitability for energy and by product generation.

Successful trials have already taken place and positive outcomes achieved giving businesses who commission the test the opportunity to understand the value in their waste that could potentially reduce energy bills or create added value revenue streams.

“Times remain tough for us all so to see award ceremonies pushing ahead and doing things differently to recognise the good work that people do is fantastic,” said Diane.

“It demonstrates the grit and determination of so many people when faced with unexpected challenges, and this emulates Rory and his work ethic. Coupled with his qualifications and extensive knowledge and experience, it has allowed him to achieve so much. We wish him lots of luck for the awards evening.”

The winners of the UK Business Tech Awards will be announced on 25th November, 8 PM, BST.
