Biffa, the UK’s leading sustainable waste management company, today announces the appointment of Roger Wright as its new Waste Strategy & Packaging Manager, a newly created role which will focus on working with packaging producers and Biffa’s customers to develop more sustainable packaging.

With over 25 years’ experience in the packaging industry, Roger joins Biffa from Marks & Spencer where he was Head of Technical Packaging.

He worked at the retailer for over eight years with a focus on creating sustainable, innovative, closed-loop solutions for packaging. Prior to this Roger held other packaging positions in the retail sector including at Sainsbury’s, as well as working for several years at leading packaging producer DS Smith.

At Biffa, Roger will leverage his unique experience from across the packaging industry and apply his expertise to consult with businesses throughout the packaging supply chain. He will work closely with them to advise on using packaging materials responsibly and maximising recycling opportunities.

He will ultimately aim to influence what goes into packaging and what comes out after use, in order to create more sustainable solutions for suppliers, producers and consumers.

Roger’s role will form an integral part of progressing Biffa’s long-term sustainability strategy, in particular its focus area of building a circular economy in the UK.

Biffa collects the most business waste in the UK and has the ambitious target to increase the recyclable materials it collects from businesses by 50% by 2030 – Roger’s focus on helping businesses produce more recyclable packaging will undoubtedly contribute towards this.

Roger Wright, Waste Strategy and Packaging Manager at Biffa, said: “Sustainable packaging solutions are clearly high on businesses’ agendas across all sectors, and working for Biffa offers an exciting opportunity to influence a huge range of businesses and brands on their packaging decisions. I look forward to working closely with Biffa’s customers to develop packaging that is innovatively smarter, recyclable and more sustainable.”

Daren King, Sales Director at Biffa, said: “Roger will without doubt be an invaluable addition to the team at Biffa. His unique experience in the packaging world will bring a new level of insight and expertise to our network of customers, enabling Biffa to have a more significant impact on creating closed-loop packaging solutions. As a business we’re committed to helping solve the UK’s waste challenge and improving the sustainability of our customers’ packaging is another way we can help to achieve this.”
